Lost and Found: Our Accidental Trip to Letchworth State Park

Some of the best adventures happen when you’re lost. At least, that’s what I tell myself whenever my GPS decides to betray me. And on this particular road trip, it led us somewhere completely unexpected—but absolutely unforgettable.

We were on our way back from Niagara Falls, planning to make a quick stop at Ommegang Brewery for a well-deserved drink. But as fate (and bad navigation) would have it, we took a wrong turn. At first, we were frustrated, aimlessly driving through unfamiliar roads, wondering how we managed to mess up such a simple route. Then, suddenly, we saw a sign: Letchworth State Park.

Neither of us had heard of it before, but since we were already off track, we figured we might as well check it out. Best. Decision. Ever.

Letchworth State Park, often called the "Grand Canyon of the East," is hands down the most beautiful park I’ve ever seen. The deep gorge, carved by the Genesee River, stretches for miles, flanked by dramatic cliffs and lush forests. And the waterfalls—oh, the waterfalls! We were absolutely blown away by the sight of the cascading water, each fall more breathtaking than the last.

What was supposed to be a quick detour turned into an entire afternoon of exploring. We hiked along scenic trails, stopping every few minutes just to take in the incredible views. The park felt like a hidden gem, something we never expected to find but were so grateful we did.

By the time we left, we had almost completely forgotten about our original plan to visit the brewery. We arrived at the brewery 30 minutes from closing. We had so much luck that they had an event that day and closed 3 hours later. A great brewery with a lot of Belgium style beers. Then we drove away with an unforgettable memory of a place we never meant to find but were so glad we did.

Sometimes, getting lost is the best way to truly find something spectacular.
